Want some Encouragement? Yes! Yes! Yes!
I am enjoying a big dose of Encouragement from none other than Tina Turner, the legendary American Queen of Rock & Roll! It’s not like I’m visiting with her at her home in Switzerland. (Although as a seasoned hypnotist I can see those beautiful lakes and feel the warmth of the sun on my skin.)
I’m talking about her latest book, Happiness Becomes You, A Guide to Changing Your Life for Good.
Tina wanted to write this book for decades but the timing just never seemed quite right. Well, 2020 was the right timing in a worldwide pandemic with too much uncertainty and too much hopelessness.
She tells her journey from the heart as she talks about times in her life that seemed like presentations of impossible circumstances. She wants everyone to know that she overcame every obstacle and we all can too.
Even though Tina authored this book at the age of 80 years young and going strong, I can assure you it is for all ages. She shares a time in her late 20’s when she became so depressed and so hopeless that she attempted suicide. Fortunately, that may have been her biggest failure; failure to accomplish suicide.
She believed that she survived to fulfill her mission in life. What’s your life mission? It could be as simple as getting up in the morning with the intention of being kind to everyone who may pass by your life today.
Being a parent is a huge mission in my book. Oh yeah! It’s 24/7 no matter what age your kids may be. We never stop caring for or about our kids no matter how distant they may be. That distance can be in miles or painstakingly in the heart.
Tina admitted that she saw an inner strength had developed after living through years of abuse. She wanted to learn how to cultivate this ability because she knew it could benefit her tremendously.
Sure enough, when the student is ready the teachers show up! She found herself surrounded by kind people in a community that fosters the happiness and full potential of all people. Her confidence and hope began to grow in that healthy environment.
And as they say, the rest is history. The history of how she began tapping into her inner courage, wisdom, and compassion for herself and others. What does Tina say about our history? On page 170 she states, “Always remember that your history is not your identity. We have a chance to re-create ourselves and start anew every day.”
She guides her readers with heart and soul into how each one of us can tap into our unlimited inner resources with determination from this moment forward.
Please know, this is not about going it alone. This is about the healing that takes place in community and in relationships with genuinely supportive people.
Her last chapter really struck a chord in me. In the summer of 2018, her son Craig took his life by suicide. Tina realized that he suffered in silence with mental health challenges. Craig had friends and family members that he could have reached out to but not reaching out is part of the mental health issue.
It indeed is suffering for all friends and family members as well. The silence prevents us from being able to help as much as we would and the mental health issues often prevent the individual from reaching out. It is bone-chilling to me and too close to home for many of us.
Mental health issues are the same as physical health issues and both require professional help. If I could, I would stop the shame that too many people feel. If you’re fainting, if you have a broken bone, if you have an unrelenting fever, you go to a doctor. Mental health issues require professional help as well.
Tina’s message is to please reach out for help if you or someone you know is suffering from mental health issues. Professionals can help you. Many people live fully functioning lives with mental health issues. Getting help is what can enable us to do so.
We all have different name tags, so to speak, that we wear. Mother, sister, friend, spouse, American, or wherever you may be from. There is one name tag we all wear and that is human. Human beings experiencing life on this tremendous planet called Earth.
Can we change our perception of looking at things as poison into medicine? Tina’s life shows that it is possible for us because she’s the living proof of it.
Please be kind to yourself in this process of inner transformation. Let it just be from this moment forward to the next moment forward, I’m sure you get my drift, my friend.
You don’t have to go it alone…
