How hypnosis works… and answers to some frequently asked questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a very natural state of relaxation.
We actually experience hypnosis many times each day. It’s like daydreaming, being caught up in a thought, zoning out, missing your exit on the highway or driving past your destination!
The relaxed state of hypnosis speeds up the process of positive change. It allows us to bypass the critical brain (conscious mind),and talk directly with the subconscious part of the brain.
All our learned behaviors and habits, the good and the bad, function out of the subconscious mind. The subconscious wants so desperately to take care of us that it follows all the commands that it has picked up over our lifetime – yes, even the illogical ones.
The critical brain is quieted during relaxation. The subconscious is wide open (as always) to receive the suggestions you have requested to acquire the changes you want.
This is the place where positive change can take place effortlessly. Out with the old, self defeating dialogues, in with the new empowering ones.
What can hypnosis help me with?
Hypnosis can help you make changes in your life. Unwanted behaviors can easily be changed into more positive ones. Fears can be eliminated. You can easily stop smoking, lose unwanted weight, stress-less.
You can even improve your study habits, or become more confident. What you want to start on is entirely up to you.
People often catch themselves with more desirable behaviors after sessions with Joann Dunsing, CT Hypnotist.
Can everyone be hypnotized?
Anyone of normal intelligence who wants to be hypnotized can be hypnotized. It’s entirely up to the individual. Remember, hypnosis is simply a state of relaxation. We go into hypnosis numerous times throughout our day!
How does hypnosis compare to traditional psychotherapies?
A comparison study:
- Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions
- Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions
- Hypnosis: 93% recovery after 6 sessions
Here’s a sampling of other studies that were done conclusively showing the benefits of hypnosis.
Does hypnosis work for everybody?
Again, it’s entirely up to the individual. No one can go above our free will. If we truly want to make a change then hypnosis is an excellent tool to help make the change.
Bypassing the critical brain is key in hypnosis. The relaxed state of hypnosis enables us to quiet the negative dialogue inside our head and make changes.
Our subconscious so desires to take care of us. We just need to consciously feed it with positive empowering suggestions.
Isn’t traditional “talk therapy” just as effective?
“Talk therapy” accesses your conscious mind (the logical part), not your subconscious (the part where our habits and behaviors function from) mind. You can make changes using “talk therapy”, but it takes a lot longer to do than using hypnosis.
Hypnosis accesses the subconscious mind directly.
Think about it for just a moment, don’t we find our behaviors to be illogical? They often are illogical to the conscious mind but being aware of that does not enable us to make major life changes. Why is that? Because the subconscious so desperately takes care of us in illogical ways! They are illogical because it often is things we picked up as children. Does behaving as a six year old work for a grown up? No, but that is exactly what we do. We run our life on silly things our subconscious absorbed as children. This is why we need to consciously give our subconscious mind new, positive, empowering suggestions.
Why don’t more people use hypnosis or get hypnosis sessions?
Most people don’t know that hypnosis can help them overcome their issues. The majority of people who learn about the benefits of hypnosis feel like they’ve been given a hope they had lost. Why continue to suffer from an issue when you can change it? When you have a cavity, you go to the dentist.
In hypnosis we even are able to assist people in overcoming traumas.
The way we do this is unique because we don’t make people relive it over and over. Our clients often leave the office knowing that they have experienced an inner healing. As the days go by the evidence of that becomes more and more obvious. It may show us as a feeling of being at peace with yourself – possibly a feeling that hasn’t been there for so long. It may show up as sleeping better. It may show up as an increase in self esteem. The evidence is limitless.
Do you use guided imagery in hypnosis?
Absolutely! Guided imagery is what we do best in the relaxed state of hypnosis. We guide you to imagine yourself just the way you want to be. Whatever you may be struggling with, we help you to see yourself just the way you want to be. To feel just the way you want to feel.
Can’t I do this myself? Why do I need to see a hypnotist?
Most of us would fix ourselves if we knew how. If our car or computer is broken, do we try to fix it ourselves if we don’t know about cars or computers? We need to go to someone who knows what they are doing to get the car or computer fixed. We may be aware that we have something in our life that we want to change, but we aren’t born with the knowledge of how to fix it. We need to see someone who has the knowledge of how to assist us in making the change we desire for ourselves.
