When some people think about summer, they picture relaxation. Long walks, vacations, afternoons at the beach, family cookouts and plenty of sunshine.
For many people, summer brings an unexpected amount of stress. If you’ve been wondering whether summer stress hypnosis can help you feel calmer, sleep better, and navigate the season with greater ease, you are on the right page!
The routines that normally help life feel manageable suddenly change. Children are home from school. College students return home for the summer. Vacations require planning. Social invitations increase. Bedtimes shift. Even the longer daylight hours can make it harder to unwind at night.
Sometimes summer feels less like a season of rest and more like a season of trying to keep up. Even too much fun can be tiring. These earth suits do require rest and rejuvenation whether we want to or not.
If you’ve been experiencing summer stress, difficulty sleeping, feeling more anxious than usual, or simply feeling a bit out of sync with yourself, you are not alone.
The good news is that your nervous system can learn to adapt. You really do know this to be true because you have experienced it so many times throughout your life.
When Your Nervous System Is Working Overtime
Many people assume stress comes only from negative events. In reality, even positive experiences require adjustment. There’s the too much fun thing again for the earth suit.
A family vacation, hosting guests, attending weddings, planning gatherings, or managing a house full of people can place additional demands on your mind and body. That’s for sure!
When the nervous system begins operating in a heightened state for too long, you may surprisingly begin to notice:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking during the night
- Racing thoughts (more than usual)
- Feeling overstimulated
- Increased irritability (don’t want that one)
- Trouble concentrating
- Feeling exhausted even when you’re getting enough rest
These are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are often signs that your nervous system is asking for support. The ask gives us an opportunity to pause long enough to take a look from the bird’s eye view before we are forced to take a look from flat on our back.
If you’ve read my article, Why Calming the Nervous System Creates Lasting Change, you already know that many of the challenges we experience are not simply problems to eliminate. They are often signals that the nervous system is working harder than it needs to/wants to. When we help the nervous system feel safe and supported, positive change often becomes easier and more sustainable. Bring on the easy!
Why Hypnosis Works So Well for Summer Stress
Hypnosis is a natural way to help calm the stress response and create greater flexibility within the nervous system.
Many people are pleasantly surprised to learn that hypnosis is not about losing control. It’s not Hollywood, you’re not going under. It’s not stage show entertainment, please do not quack. In fact, it helps you develop more control over automatic patterns that may no longer be serving you. That’s a great take away from eyes closed relaxed in a recliner!
During hypnosis, your mind and body enter a deeply relaxed state while remaining aware as an active participant. This creates an opportunity to shift old habits of thinking, feeling, and reacting. Clients often tell me they feel lighter, calmer, and more grounded after a session. Not because life suddenly changed, but because their perspective to life changed. It’s that bird’s eye view thing; the space between the stimulus and our response.
Sleep Struggles During the Summer Months
One of the most common concerns I hear this time of year is disrupted sleep. Longer daylight hours, travel, schedule changes, and increased activity can all affect sleep quality.
It’s frustrating to feel tired, but unable to quiet your mind when bedtime arrives. Your brain may be planning your next day instead of counting sheep. Hypnosis helps by teaching the mind and body how to move out of doing mode and into a state that supports rest and recovery. Counting backwards slowly can be very effective because the brain is wired to naturally relax when counting backwards or down into relaxation as I like to say.
When the nervous system becomes calmer, sleep often follows more naturally. Many clients tell me they begin falling asleep more easily, wake less often during the night, and feel more refreshed in the morning.
Social Events Without the Mental Exhaustion
Summer can bring plenty of opportunities for connection. It can also bring more opportunities for anxiety; some people worry about what to say. Others feel drained by large gatherings. Some find themselves rehearsing conversations before an event or replaying them afterward. That can be a little scary because life often doesn’t go the way that we think it should.
Hypnosis can help reduce that anticipatory anxiety and build confidence from the inside out. It really is an inside job and we can practice causing the inner environment to be greater than the outer.
Instead of spending the entire event in your head, you may find yourself more present for the people and experiences around you. Whether it’s a family gathering, neighborhood barbecue, wedding, vacation, or social event, feeling more comfortable in your own skin can make all the difference.
Returning to What Matters Most
Summer reminds us what really matters: connection, time in nature, rest, and meaningful moments. When your nervous system feels more balanced, it becomes easier to enjoy the season instead of pushing through it.
