It was such a joy to interview Michelle A. R. Hydeck, author of the beautifully illustrated children’s book, Wings Up. Produced and directed by the talented David A. Smith, this episode explores how the two simple words “Wings Up” can offer children (and adults too) a pathway to calm, courage, and spiritual connection.
Michelle’s story introduces us to little Emma, who wakes from a nightmare feeling scared and alone. When she calls out for her mother, she learns something very comforting, that she is never alone. Through the soothing voice of her mother and the comforting presence of angels, Emma learns how to shift her focus from fear to faith and light.
It’s a process that mirrors the gentle power of self-hypnosis, using words, imagery, and breath to calm the nervous system and create a safe feeling.
As Emma closes her eyes and whispers, “Wings Up,” she invites her angels to form a loving circle around her, allowing only good thoughts (like butterflies, presents, and kitties) to come through their wings, while nightmares and worries are kept out. This simple intention helps her ease anxiety, fall back to sleep, and feel protected.
Whether you’re comforting a child at bedtime, or exploring ways to soothe your own inner world, Wings Up is a reminder that we all have the ability to pause, breathe, and connect to something greater.
