Dr. Oz interviews Hypnotist Paul McKenna about hypnosis for weight loss.

This particular episode describes McKenna’s “hypnotic gastric bypass” technique. The women demonstration subjects report feeling full after eating only 25% of the amount of food they usually consume. In the course of only 5 days each woman lost several pounds. One as much as 7 pounds.

One of the key insights that Paul McKenna shared in one of the other Dr. Oz episodes was that “overweight people think about food all day long except when they are actually eating it.”

I’ve noticed this myself when working with weight loss clients. They obsess about food all day but then when they start to eat or snack they literally go into a trance state and have almost no memory of having eaten.

When the Cheetos are gone they suddenly wake up and look in the empty bag and almost feel like, “hey who ate all my Cheetos?”

That is a trance state. If they are self hypnotizing themselves s to use food as self-medication then we can use hypnosis to stop that pattern and program better, healthier, more sustainable eating habits.

Learn more about how you can benefit from Hypnosis to lose weight, melt away the inches and stop the deprivation, stop the binge eating, stop the diet roller-coaster.

I recently read an incredibly interesting article titled, “Fighting Lonliness and Disease with Meditation.”

It didn’t surprise me that in several controlled studies, senior citizens who practiced meditation demonstrated markedly less loneliness, lower stress and healthier physical responses as demonstrated by blood samples.

Anyone who sees meditation as a hippy-dippy endeavor has found his or her view increasingly challenged by science in recent years.

Meditation and other contemplative practices are continuing to claim their place at the table of mainstream medicine.

This is true for a slew of reasons: chief among them, the recognition that hordes of us are stressed out, that stress wreaks havoc upon our bodies and that the practice of meditation has significant and measurable stress-reduction properties.

In a recent study led by J. David Creswell, assistant professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, mindfulness-based meditation continues to reveal itself as a therapeutic powerhouse, with far-reaching influence on both psychological and physical health.

read the full article here: “Fighting Lonliness and Disease with Meditation.”

Unfortunately no one has funded a similar study on hypnosis but since hypnosis and meditation essentially access the same mind/body state of relaxation I would be willing to bet the results would be the same.

The question this brings up is really what is the difference if any between “guided meditation” and a formal hypnosis session? What is the difference between meditation and self hypnosis?

Essentially the intention may be different but otherwise they are pretty darn similar.

Both hypnosis and meditation quiet the chatter of the conscious mind.

Both utilize relaxation techniques.

Both may utilize focus on the breath.

Both have a range of depth of trance or depth of meditative state.

Here’s the only difference that I can see:

Meditation aims to quiet the mind and just “be”. Hypnosis is generally focused on making a specific improvement in physical, mental or emotional well being.

In meditation you attempt to watch your thoughts without judgment and aim to be present in the “now.” Letting thoughts come and go without attachment… In hypnosis you can literally “change the negative program and install a more positive strategy for solving life’s challenges”.

They may look the same. They may feel the same. But essentially hypnosis is designed to create positive change. Meditation is designed to allow you to simply observe and practice non-attachment which may or may not lead to a positive change. In the article, “Fighting Loneliness and Disease with Meditaiton” the meditators definitely experienced a number of positive benefits, but they were pleasant surprises not “intended” results.

Personally I enjoy having both options. I have also met long time meditation practitioners who had some specific challenges they were attempting to deal with in their lives and all the meditation they did served to enable them to be aware of the problems but not how to change them. The problem is that some of our patterns of behavior that cause us problems as adults, were installed or created when we were children. These patterns are now deeply embedded in the unconscious mind and it’s really hard to fix something that you are unconscious of because you don’t know it’s there. A hypnotherapist or NLP practitioner can help you to uncover and release these old patterns.

The process feels a lot like…. guided meditation!

The bottom line is that people who meditate are usually really good at hypnosis. People who respond well to hypnosis might definitely want to explore meditation as a way to strengthen their ability to relax and de-stress.

An interesting side note: After meditating about writing this post, I observed that the article title is so typical of our western mindset of “Fighting” things like loneliness or disease. I guess it makes a better headline than, “Stopping Loneliness and Healing Disease With Meditation”. The very idea of “fighting” things is totally opposite of the process of allowing, accepting, noticing, and transforming.

One suggestion I’d like to make is that the next time you aren’t feeling connected to other people, or aren’t feeling totally healthy, instead of fighting it, relax, take some nice long deep breaths, and imagine being so relaxed and present in the moment that you can notice how good you feel…

As a hypnotist in CT I am aware that we are at ground zero for Lyme Disease. Originally identified in and around Old Lyme CT, this tick born spirochete can cause massive havoc with your body. If caught in time, Lyme seems to respond well to medical intervention with antibiotics. For some people the antibiotics either don’t work or don’t completely eliminate the symptoms.

That’s where hypnosis and other alternative medicine approaches come in.

Hypnotherapy can be a tremendous help for reducing chronic pain associated with Lyme Disease. Hypnosis can also boost your own immune system so that your body can heal itself.

Another area that most medical practitioners can’t really address is the area where hypnosis truly shines. What is the difference between one Lyme patient who gets better and another who doesn’t?

Diet, immune system, stress, past trauma, attitudes and beliefs.

When I work with someone who is suffering from Lyme Disease, I don’t just treat the symptoms. In fact I don’t “treat”. I’m not a doctor, so I do not diagnose or treat. I can work with your doctor or naturopath to boost all of the other factors that can make a positive difference in your recovery.

A frequent question I get is “how many sessions will it take?” This is impossible to answer. I’ve had clients who got tremendous relief immediately and others who needed more time and more support.

With each hypnosis session, I teach self care and self hypnosis tools that you can use between sessions to support the work we do together.

For example, one vital area to address is self limiting beliefs. If you believe at a deep level that you can not get better, guess what? We have to address that first! The way your unconscious mind is wired, if there is a self limiting belief in place and running in the background your innate healing system has to play by those rules.

It’s like a computer with a virus in it. You may need a more powerful program to take out the thought virus before you can then get in there and clean up the hard drive.

Hypnosis can help on both those fronts. If you are suffering from Lyme Disease and are under the care of a physician, I can help you heal faster and easier. A doctor’s referral is required in these cases.

One of the greatest challenges we have as hypnotists is convincing our clients that they were actually hypnotized. There has been so much misleading information out in the media about hypnosis that the average person who considers hypnotherapy as a possible choice for Quitting Smoking or Losing Weight has an in accurate understanding of what hypnosis is and isn’t.

first of all most people, particularly the first few times, don’t feel particularly “different”. They may remember everything the hypnotist says and think that it can’t have worked because they expected to “go under.”

An article in the New York Times, by Jane E. Brody

The Possibilities in Hypnosis, Where the Patient Has the Power

does an excellent job of addressing this issue. Because the truth is while hypnosis can be extremely effective in support change to take place, it is actually the clients own mind which does the changing, not the hypnotist.

The NY Times article points out a number of people who didn’t think they were hypnotized but who went on to experience the change that they went to hypnosis to achieve.

Richard, smoked cigarettes for 50 years, having failed several attempts to quit on his own. When a friend told him in August 1994 that hypnosis had enabled her to quit, he decided to give it a try.

“It didn’t work; I wasn’t hypnotized,” he declared after his one and only session. But it did work; since that day, he has not taken one puff of a cigarette.

Gloria Kanter of Boynton Beach, Fla., thought her attempt in 1985 to use hypnosis to overcome her fear of flying had failed. “When the therapist brought me out, I said it didn’t work,” she recalled in an interview. “I told her, ‘I heard everything you said.’ ”

Nonetheless, the next time she and her husband headed for the airport, she was not drenched in sweat and paralyzed with fear. “I was just fine,” she said, “and I’ve been fine ever since.”

Read the full article: The Possibilities in Hypnosis, Where the Patient Has the Power

Essentially hypnosis is not magic. Hypnosis is utilization of a relaxed state in order to make suggestions directly to the unconscious mind where all unconscious behavior, beliefs, memories and emotions are generated.

I like to say to ask my clients, “who is the most powerful hypnotist in the world?”

It’s the client of course.

As a highly trained hypnotist, my role is to lead them into a relaxed state where I essentially give them their own suggestions. Now I may know how to form the suggestions into language that is more readily accepted by their own minds, but essentially the suggestions came from them. I don’t suggest they make changes that I want them to make. It doesn’t work that way. I give them suggestions for changes that they have decided they want.

There is something profoundly effective about having a skilled practitioner assist in delivering the suggestions that makes a positive difference.

The NY Times article also points out that we can not be hypnotized to do something we do not want to do. So essentially it is one of the safest forms of therapeutic change work available.

If you are ready to make a change in your personal or professional life, consider hypnosis.

What is hypnosis…. really?

And why does it work?

Why does it work really fast sometimes and other times seems to not be working at all (it is actually working. Read on and I’ll explain)?

These are just a few of the questions that I field on a daily basis from people who want to quit smoking, lose weight, stop panic attacks or anxiety, reduce stress, increase success and attract and keep great relationships in their lives.

A few answers:

Q: What is hypnosis?

A: Hypnosis has been defined various ways over the years. For me the simplest explanation is that hypnosis is the process of consciously directing your unconscious mind. Another good way of looking at it is “Hypnosis is following directions.”

Q: Why does it work?

A: Hypnosis works because your unconscious mind is hardwired to follow directions. From the earliest ages of our brain development as children we are installing directives into our subconscious. This is really helpful so that you don’t have to consciously be bothered to remember certain things like looking both ways to cross the street Or how to ride a bicycle. You Unconscious mind holds that information once it is installed so you can be free to do other more interesting things with your conscious mind. Like crossing the street to meet that attractive person of your affections… Safely.

Q: Why does it obviously work sometimes and not others?

A: Hypnosis always works. That is a fact. The challenge is that there are multiple hypnotic influences all around you (and within you) at any given time that may secretly conflict with the desired change you want.

Here are some examples:

Your childhood parental and educational instructions. For example: “Finish everything on your plate.” “If you are good you’ll get ice cream”, “Nice girls don’t do that….” “Big boys don’t cry.” etc.

Your animal instincts and desires... sex is a biggy. Your physical desire for food and comfort and soothing is also. Quite often the more we try NOT to be ruled by it or the more we resist it, the more it has. It defies our logical, conscious mind. We find our selfs either obsessed or just engaging in a behavior and almost not having conscious control or even memory of “who ate all the potato chips?”

Cultural beliefs and moral teachings.
Example: A lot of my clients who grew up in religious households have a never ending stream of commandments that are well intentioned but often misinterpreted as children like “original sin – You were born bad. You should feel guilty all the time.” This can lead to unconscious behaviors that either play out the belief, “I’m bad” or install a weird striving for being “good” or perfect, that can be just as much a problem as engaging in a lot of risky behaviors. For many others the constant stream of messages on TV and other forms of media have a huge influence. Just watching the news every day can have a huge and powerful influence on your unconscious mind and how it filters your experience of reality.

Limiting decisions or beliefs that are threatened in some way by the proposed change.
For example:
If you want to lose weight and we give your unconscious mind appropriate and proven suggestions to that effect but you have a conflicting “program” running deep in the background that trumps it, it will appear that hypnosis is not working. The reality is hypnosis is in effect. But the older, more powerful suggestion that you may have adopted without question as a child IS the hypnosis. The old suggestion is not going to allow the new one to take hold.

Here’s an example with a recent client. She comes from a family where everyone is heavy. For three generations everyone in her family has been heavy. We identified an old decision/belief that in order to be a part of her family and ensure their love, she had to be like them. Another belief running along with this one was that the weight around her was a form of protection from people outside of her family who were needy and threatening.

So in order for our new hypnosis to be allowed to take effect and replace the old program we have to first be aware of the old one. Sometimes that takes a bit of detective work. Which takes some time. Then we have to remove the old program and install the new one and test it to make sure it is working.

There is so much mis-information out there about hypnosis and how to create positive, lasting change. I encourage you and all my clients to get curious not only about hypnosis and other mind centered approaches to transformation (NLP, EFT, etc.) but to get curious about this amazing puzzle just waiting to be solved…. You!

A major factor in using hypnosis to facilitate pain relief is a power that we all have though don’t often pay much attention to.

The power to shift our focus.

You could even say that hypnosis for pain relief is all about learning how to “forget to notice” pain.

A recent article on FoxNews.com, titled, Working Through Pain May Actually Reduce It, points to mounting research that we have the ability to reduce chronic pain through a shift in our focus. it’s pretty much obvious that if you sit at home with your pain with nothing else to do you will actually feel it more than if you go to work and immerse yourself in other things.

German researchers used spinal functional MRIs to view the spinal cords of 20 men as they were exposed to painful levels of heat to their arms. At the same time, the study participants had to complete either a hard or an easy memory task.

When the men were given a hard memory task, they perceived less pain than when they were given an easier task. Moreover, the MRIs detected less activity in the spinal cord during a hard mental task. What that means is that fewer pain signals were being relayed to the brain.

Distraction may release natural opioids, which play a key role in pain relief, the authors wrote in their study.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/06/14/working-through-pain-may-actually-reduce-it/#ixzz1zW3S0Yw8

As a practitioner of Hypnosis in Milford CT, I often work with clients who are dealing with chronic pain. After first making sure that they have seen a doctor for their pain I can give these sufferers numerous tools to reduce it.

Over eons, human beings evolved the ability to escape the physical body through trance. Whether it was because we were prey for lions and leopards and were given the merciful ability to leave the body, or for some other reason, it is common for people who have been in horrendous accidents to describe feeling no pain at all. The pain came in later after they were starting to recover from their wounds.

So we have the ability to transcend pretty intense sensations. Before the introduction of anesthesia in the 19th Century advances in surgery were made by using hypnosis to stop pain on the operating table.

For people today who are experiencing chronic pain or discomfort that drugs just can’t alleviate, hypnosis is an excellent option. While it is certainly more than just “mere distraction” hypnosis works because the person deeply shifts their attention and awareness. If your unconscious mind can create more saliva in your mouth by merely imagining biting into a lemon, then it can reduce pain by shifting attention away from one area of the body to another.

Another tool that works well is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) also known as Meridian Tapping, which involves tapping on specific acupressure points. It is also an extremely silly (at first) thing to do and that very fact is a benefit because it is definitely a distraction.

When I’m working with all kinds of hypnosis clients, from people who want to stop smoking or lose weight, I will often assign a few rounds of “tapping” before the next cigarette or when faced with “challenge foods”. Even if the tapping did nothing else but distract them from their habitual pattern, it works.

CT Tobacco Taxes Taxing You? Stop Smoking With Hypnosis

I saw an article in The Chicago Tribune the other day reporting that the Illinois cigarette taxes are going up an additional dollar. Some people think that more taxes will discourage smoking. Others say smokers will just go across state lines or buy from Indian Reservations.

Current local and state taxes on a pack of smokes in Chicago are $3.66, according to the anti-smoking Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The $1 increase would bring the combined tax rate to $4.66 in Chicago, behind only the $5.85 per pack rate in New York City.

Here’s the link to the full Chicago Tribune article on rising Cigarette Taxes.

That got me wondering what the actual taxes are here in Connecticut. Turns out to be about $3.50 per pack (based on this map. Don’t get all huffy if it’s not up to date. I’m just trying to make a point). According to this map, only New York has higher taxes… There are also local taxes on top of the state taxes so the reality is if you are a Cigarette Smoker in CT you are being taxed… a lot.

To see what the Cigarette taxes are in any other state click here: State Tobacco Tax Map

The next question is, why not just quit with hypnosis? Seriously. Hypnosis has been proven to work. It has been approved by the American Medical Association since 1958.

And YES! I AM saying that because I am a Connecticut Hypnotist.

I work with astounded smokers every day who after one or two sessions completely walk away from the tobacco habit with few or no withdrawal symptoms. After years of facilitating the easy, withdrawal free extinquishing of the cigarette habit, even I am often amazed at how well it works.

I work with this every day but if the average smoker realized how much easier it is to stop smoking with hypnosis they would run, not walk into offices of hypnotherapists all across the nation.

Even if it took 4 sessions or 10 sessions of hypnosis you would be way ahead than with all the other methods out there that are deceitfully designed to keep you hooked on something. It’s good business to either keep you buying the cigarettes or buying the pills, patches, gum and fake cigarettes.

Just checked the average price of cigarettes in Connecticut. $8.25 as of June 2011.If you smoke a pack a day and you are paying only $10.00 per pack, that’s $250 per month you will be putting in your pocket for the rest of your life (when you quit)…. That’s $3,000 a year. If you live only 10 more years that’s $30,000 dollars… if you live another 20 years that’s $60,000… and that’s assuming no future increase in prices (which you know are just going to continue to rise).

Seriously, instead of paying all the taxes to the state and municipal governments for the privilege of slowly destroying your health and bank account, why not just stop smoking with hypnosis? Now.

If you’re not ready yet that’s fine, you have to be ready to do it. But what will it take? cigarettes at $15.00 a pack or $20.00 a pack?

Sure increasing taxes are a drag. Money out of your pocket every day that could be used for better things is sad. But what is the real cost of smoking for you?

Whose graduation will you miss because your life was cut short?

Don’t you want to watch your children and grandchildren grow up? What is the cost of missing that?

And then all those cold rainy, snowy, windy days huddled outside with the other tobacco slaves, feeling like outcasts as you grab your nicotine fix? What does that cost?

Or struggling to climb the stairs that you used to scamper up as a kid?

Or the way your clothes stink?

Everybody is different. What finally pushes you over the edge is unique for you. Again. The key to success in quitting smoking with hypnosis is this question: Are you ready to quit? Is the cost of staying the same outweighing the big scary unknown of walking into a hypnotherapist’s office and getting some help?

When you’re ready, I can help.

I got an email this morning from a perspective weight loss hypnosis client here in the Greater New Haven CT area. She asked a number of excellent questions about using hypnosis for weight loss that I lot of people ask well beyond Connecticut so I felt it appropriate to share my answer.

First Question: Will hypnosis give me noticeable results quickly?

One of her challenges was in firing up her will power in order to exercise, but after 2 weeks not seeing results, just giving up.

Can you relate to that? She feels like she eats healthfully, and in moderate proportions most of the time but sits for her job 8 hours a day. Weight related illnesses also run in her family. So in her late 40′s she is getting the message that it is time to do something significant to address the weight/lack of movement in her life. One question is would hypnosis work for her. And would it be able to give her tangible results and the kind of support needed to move through and past the plateaus and other things that tend to stop people’s progress towards a fit and lean body.

Here’s my reply to her.

I really get the “not seeing results” challenge. That’s why we focus on a lot of different areas besides “the scale”.

For example, one of my clients had been through a lot of intense stress and life challenges. At age 50, he had packed on about 15 or 20 pounds of belly fat. Because he’d lost his successful business and experienced a difficult relationship breakup all at once, he was “way stressed.”

He had been working out twice a week with a personal trainer. He was eating healthy whole grains, lots of veggies, and healthy organic fruits and grass fed hormone free, lean meats.

He was not eating junk food. He was not eating a bunch of sweets or drinking beer.

After 6 months of working out two to three times a week with his trainer, there was NO change in his weight.

Needless to say it was frustrating for him. Okay it was more than a bit frustrating.

BUT he could tell he was getting stronger. He could feel his metabolism cranking for hours after the workouts.

He decided to try hypnosis. In our first hypnosis session I introduced him to the idea of creating a channel of communication between his conscious mind (seat of will power) and his Unconscious Mind (source of all emotions, habits and learning). I asked his unconscious mind, “What are we not getting that if we got it would allow you to let go of the extra inches and pounds?”

Then he “got” some information. It just bubbled up:

“I’ve been eating whole grains…. I tend to not do well on those foods but they had been “slipping” back in to my food choices. I was eating really good, healthy organic grains. All the “health experts” say they are wonderful for you. But my body just doesn’t do well on them. That’s the message I’m getting…”

So he cut out all grains and he lost 4 inches around his middle in a couple of weeks. His weight continued to stay the same. Now we all know that muscle weighs more than fat. It’s denser and it uses more energy. So it’s the inches are a better determinant. He continued to crave exercise. He continued to eat healthy foods. But now he ad significantly cleared a hurdle that was quietly stopping him…

One day his personal trainer disappeared! He just never showed up again. The gym had no clue where he went!

But my client had learned some good work out skills and how to use the equipment in the gym safely… With the support of our regular hypnosis sessions, he kept working out on his own. In those six months a new habit had formed…

Then he hit another plateau… he came in for another self hypnosis session and got the realization that he was eating quite a lot of fruit…. Even though the “experts” tell us that fruit is sooooo good for us. His unconscious mind gave him the clear message that fruit was something he had to cut way back on.

So he cut the fruit out and almost instantly dropped 10 of the 20 pounds he had been working for a year to lose.

Now he could have gotten frustrated and given up because he doing everything right. He was eating healthfully and working out but still not getting results.

what will YOU look like in your 90's?

Working with a trained hypnotherapist, enabled him to get information that wasn’t really available to him. It was the key to shifting his efforts into actual results. With some clear results it’s easier to maintain a pattern of positive behavior. And by listening to his unconscious mind, he was able to make the changes necessary to get LONG TERM results. The short term fluctuations are seductive. But if he kept in mind an image of himself in his 90′s, slim and trim and full of energy.

Most people don’t have the tools to keep persisting on their own. And even we hypnotists do much better with our own weight and fitness goals when we are actively working with weight loss clients! So the support piece is HUGE.

BTW if you ever meet a hypnotist or hypnotherapist who doesn’t see the need for their own hypnosis sessions where they work on their own challenges, run the other way. The best hypnosis practitioners have experienced the benefits of hypnosis and continue to use it for themselves…

Now where was I?

Oh yes, we get results in hypnosis because we understand how your unconscious mind works. That is where your metabolism is regulated. your appetite is regulated, your cravings are regulated, your craving to move, to stretch, to snack on super-foods instead of “comfort” foods… etc.

Ironically we often have cravings for foods that we have sensitivities to or even out right allergies. With hypnosis we can get straight answers from your unconscious mind about what works well for you as fuel. We are all different. What works for my body doesn’t necessarily work for yours and vice versa.

Next Question: How much does it cost?

My prospective client also wanted to know the cost. That is always one of the first questions and justifiably so. We are ok spending money if we get results but it’s hard to justify an expense if it doesn’t deliver. This is a bit tricky because unless you are willing to value yourself enough to invest in a program for a long enough time to clear the blocks and address the underlying issues behind over eating or weight loss and exercise issues, then you aren’t considering the cost of continuing on without changing.

For many people if they don’t stop doing what they are doing to their bodies they may quite literally die.

If you don't take care of your body where will you live?

If you don’t take care of your body where will you live?

Seriously consider the consequences of not making the changes now that you know in your heart you need to make.

I suggest a commitment to three sessions, the second one week apart, the next one two weeks apart then I suggest a maintenance schedule.

Now, I have had a number of clients who came in for a single session and 6 months later were 60 pounds lighter…

That’s what we ALL want! Right! Magical, instant results… with very little effort…. without having to change anything…

The truth is those clients were so ready, so motivated, so determined to transform their lives that all they really needed was a little nudge. With a little bit of support and alignment and they were off to the races.

But more typically, weight loss success requires some ongoing support. We have years and years of failure and frustration to deal with. While hypnosis is an amazing tool and can seem to work miracles, a single hypnosis session vs. 40 years of bad eating habits and self defeating thought patterns is like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. But several weeks or months of hypnosis can begin to significantly re-route your neurology so the years and years of negative patterns are gently extinguished and new pathways are formed that lead you to the results you want.

I’m currently working with a client in my 6 month program who works a high stress job, and who’s the primary caretaker of an elderly mom who is battling an illness. Talk about stress!

In our last hypnosis session she said,

“I’m making better food choices, Stopped eating fast food. I am craving greens and fresh vegetables. I’m walking and taking the stairs and working in the yard more and it’s not a struggle to motivate myself. BUT even if I had none of those results, I would find it to be worth the money just to spend the hour or so in peace and feeling the support every week or so. It has enabled me to set down the chronic stress that was grinding me down…”

Most of us need the steady support to be ongoing because we have to eat every day, we deal with life stresses and relationship stresses and family “stuff” every day that impacts how we feel and we tend to use food to soothe ourselves.

And most importantly no one teaches us how to communicate with our unconscious minds. That takes some practice. But once you learn how to do it in any area of your life, say food and exercise, it makes anything possible in any other area.

Also the food advertisers know how your unconscious mind works and they are actively using hypnotic techniques to get you to eat more of their super sized junk. Learning how to push your own buttons instead of being vulnerable to them doing it to you is a huge step in empowerment.

Hypnosis for weight loss is not about a “diet” or “fitness regimen” it’s a about a positive and long term lifestyle change which starts with your mind. A change of heart and Mind.

Wow, I got a bit carried away with this post. I hope you’ve stuck with me so far.

Let’s face it. America is in the middle of an obesity crisis. In spite of all the Low Fat Foods, Fitness Centers, diet pills (as advertised on TV), diet soda, and government food pyramid diagrams, more and more Americans are overweight, diabetic, sick and tired.

All the hype and fad diets, liposuction, plastic surgery and stomach stapling operations do nothing to change the real problems. All those expensive solutions do is deal with symptoms.

Can Hypnosis help you lose weight and get fit once and for all?

One of the challenges of changing eating habits and exercise habits is that we run into resistance from our unconscious minds.

weight Loss Hypnosis: How is Your Unconscious Mind is like an Elephant?

Imagine an elephant, huge, powerful, extremely intelligent. Now picture the elephant trainer. tiny and weak in comparison. If the elephant trainer (your conscious mind or will power) wants the elephant to stop eating too many peanuts but the elephant (your unconscious mind or imagination) wants the peanuts, the elephant is gonna eat the peanuts. Just try to stop it.

Does that make sense?

.

.

Now.

You tell yourself, "Don't eat the cake!" but you do anyway right?

Imagine someone puts a beautiful piece of rich, moist chocolate cake in front of you. But you’ve just started yet another diet. You are already feeling stressed and deprived. It’s like the cake is calling your name…. your conscious mind says, “No!” but your unconscious mind says, “YES! GIMME, GIMME. I WANT IT NOW! GIVE…. IT…. TO …. ME ….. N.O.W.!” (sound effect of Elephant trumpeting LOUDLY)

You know what’s going to happen. You are going to eat that cake. Later you’ll beat yourself up for it. Or just figure it’s hopeless and you might as well just eat all the crap you’ve tried to stop eating. What’s the use?

Am I close?

But what if your unconscious mind was actually on your side and helping you to change your food choices? What if instead of having to fight with your unconscious mind, your unconscious mind was craving healthy green veggies?

What if the mere thought of cake repulsed you? Or the very picture of cake or any other food that you used to be addicted to, caused you to shift your focus to health and healthy life choices?

Without you having to “Will” yourself there.

What if you CRAVED healthy foods?

What if you were pre-programmed to make healthy food and beverage choices that led you easily down the path you know would support you physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually?

If you can imagine what that might be like, you’ve just experienced the first step in making the changes you want with hypnosis.

Hypnosis works for weight loss because it works with your unconscious mind, where all your cravings and emotions are generated from in the first place. Hypnosis can help you to soothe the rough areas in your emotional life that you are using food to soothe now. If you don’t need food to self medicate it stops being an addiction.

But understanding your unconscious mind and how to communicate with this powerful aspect of you, is the key to long term success in any change you desire to make.

Have questions about how I can help you to make the changes you want in your life more easily? I’m always happy to chat for a minute to answer your questions by phone or email.

Anxiety is the malady of the modern age… or is it?

According to Stop Anxiety Expert Mark Shepard, “Anxiety is thinking vividly about what you do NOT want to have happen.”

If that is the case, anxiety is every bit as much a blessing to the human race as it is a problem.

Think about it. If your ancestors weren’t able to think about the future and make appropriate plans for food storage, warm clothing and shelter, none of us would be here to day to worry about whatever it is that you are worrying about….

Let’s see… (just for fun I’ve lumped a bunch of anxiety labels together)

Test Anxiety

Male Performance Anxiety

Music Performance Anxiety

Social Anxiety (what used to be called “Shyness”

General Anxiety Disorder a.k.a. G.A.D.

Panic Disorder, panic attacks

Phobias: agoraphobia, emetophobia, technophobia,

Then there is good old fashioned FEAR! Let’s see: fear of flying, fear of speaking in public, fear of elevators, fear of success, fear of the phone, fear of spending money on new socks…

Maybe we should have a label for having anxiety about having anxiety? (seriously!)

If focusing on negative outcomes can cause your body to react as if the imagined event is real… what would happen if you learned how to focus on positive outcomes using hypnosis?

Hypnosis can assist you to create the kinds of images and self talk and reassuring thoughts that cause your body to release endorphins and other “feel good” chemicals instead of the “feel not so good” chemical cocktail of your typical anxiety triggered fight of flight reaction.

If you or someone you love suffers from anxiety and are open to working with a hypnotist in the Milford CT area, please imagine what it would be like to feel totally relaxed and comfortable and able to enjoy life! Then call me so we can re-train your unconscious mind to focus on the future in a way that gets you want you want out of life.
